Casper Notetaker

A menu-bar app that records my meetings through a native audio tap, prompted by the calendar, and turns each call into a filed, linked note in my Personal OS. Around 15 calls recorded since July 2026, with no bot joining any of them and no subscription.

Why it exists

Meeting bots are the usual way to record calls. They appear as a participant, they need an invite, they only work on video calls, and each costs a subscription. I wanted my own notes of each meeting, with the usual heads-up to the people on the call and recording as the only manual act.

How it works

A menu-bar ghost reads the calendar (read-only). Five minutes before a meeting and again at the start it asks one question, with the meeting title and participant count: record? Saying yes opens a process-scoped audio tap on the meeting app only, mixes in the microphone, and writes stereo with me on one channel and the call on the other, which is what makes speaker separation reliable later. The ghost turns red with a counter while recording; a floating window shows the timer, a stop button, a permission health strip and the last recordings with their processing state. Recording stops on silence, on event end, or on the button. The file lands in a local folder that the Voice pipeline watches, so transcription, attribution and filing into my Personal OS in Obsidian, the note, the people in the call, the tasks, the CRM, happen with no extra step, and audio leaves the machine only as the encrypted upload to the transcription service, which deletes it after processing.
